Huawei HarmonyOS emerge to look down on Google

The move is viewed as Huawei's work to adjust subsequent to losing admittance to Google's portable services. The (US) two years prior put Huawei on the exchange boycott. An aggregate of 100 Huawei cell phone models will be refreshed with the HarmonyOS system. The framework will likewise be accessible for certain tablet and savvy screen models in the final quarter of this current year.

"The client experience utilizing HarmonyOS outperforms the involvement with the Android time.

"We figured out how to determine issues, for example, gadget issues easing back down sooner or later in the Android period.

"HarmonyOS has more capacities and is stronger, and it will be the best working framework in this 'web of things' period."

The dispatch of the working framework to Huawei purchaser gadgets was done after the organization was boycotted in the (US). This makes some significant administrations including Google and central processors denied from being exchanged with Huawei. The U.S. has blamed Huawei for aiding conduct spying for the Chinese government, a case the organization denies.

The boycott was a gigantic blow for Huawei as it depends on a ton of significant innovation from the US.

Microsoft Surface 3 : no more portable but port to table

The Microsoft Surface Studio 3 just around the corner but there's no authority declarations or even breaks about another Surface work area, however we could see the most recent variant of Microsoft's best across the board PC some time this year. Here are the entirety of the current bits of gossip and a couple of taught surmises about when the new Surface Studio 3 will be delivered, what it may cost, and what changes could be accompanying the at this point unannounced model.

The Surface Studio line has been a normal top choice on our rundown of the best across the board PCs since the time our first Microsoft Surface Studio audit in 2016, and we adored the development in our Microsoft Surface Studio 2 survey in 2018. Be that as it may, two years is quite a while to sit tight for another model with current equipment and abilities, and we presume another form of the Surface Studio is close to the corner.

The 28-inch Surface Studio is the greatest individual from Microsoft's Surface group of tablets, 2-in-1s and PCs, flaunting a noteworthy look that weds the across the board plan with the most agreeable touchscreen for drawing we've at any point seen. With a noteworthy showcase that backings contact, pen and surprisingly the Surface Dial, alongside a great double pivot plan that allows the screen to conform to a low plot for open to drawing, the Surface Studio has acquired its place among the best PCs accessible for genuine creatives. Incredible equipment and solid execution settle on it an advantageous decision for any expert clients. Also, the entire thing is enclosed by a smooth, delightful plan that is immediately basic and refined, both in fact and in its interpretations.

The Specs

With an amazing presentation that backings contact, pen and surprisingly the Surface Dial, alongside a great double pivot plan that allows the screen to conform to a low plot for open to drawing, the Surface Studio has procured its place among the best PCs accessible for genuine creatives. Incredible equipment and solid execution settle on it a beneficial decision for any expert clients. Also, the entire thing is enveloped by a smooth, excellent plan that is without a moment's delay straightforward and modern, both in fact and in its interpretations.

Ports

Exchanging the current USB Type-C ports to Thunderbolt 3 (or even the more up to date Thunderbolt 4) is a potential change that has been on Surface-client's lists of things to get for quite a long time. Thunderclap 3 offers altogether more adaptability than USB-C, on account of quicker information speeds, permitting an entire scope of peripherals to associate with a machine through a solitary port, from high-goal screens to outer capacity.

In any case, Thunderbolt 3's utilization of Direct Memory Access (DMA) for perusing and composing straightforwardly to RAM clashes with Microsoft's plan and security methods of reasoning, seen in past Surface items utilizing welded RAM – apparently on the grounds that it's safer, yet in addition more affordable from an assembling stance. Yet, on the off chance that Thunderbolt 3 or 4 will occur on any Surface gadget, the work area Studio 3 would be the spot it appears.

Price

Well its is reported that the price will be around USD 3499 and higher.

Google Pixel 6 review 2021

Toward the finish of Google's I/O 2021 featured discussion, the product goliath moved toward handling an issue that has tormented picture preparing since the coming of shading camera innovation. Google needs to make versatile photography more comprehensive, with more lovely and exact pictures of ethnic minorities.

Keeping that in mind, Google is collaborating with a different gathering of picture specialists to make the organization's camera and picture items better. From that point, its specialists are attempting to improve the exactness of auto white equilibrium and auto openness calculations utilizing assorted picture information. The outcomes should bring about more exact pictures of individuals, with an accentuation set on those with hazier skin.

Google's endeavors will go to the Pixel telephone first, with the Pixel 6 presenting the improve calculations in the fall, however Google intends to offer the improved computational programming to other Android camera telephones.

Current photography, both purposeful and not, will in general lean toward more attractive skin. As indicated by Zippia, a larger part of computer programmers in the U.S. are comprised of white men. A majority of Asian men probably make up designing groups in Japan, China and Korea. Regardless of whether it's a facial acknowledgment application or what should be one of the world's best versatile cameras, ethnic minorities aren't generally a need.

Google is hoping to change things. This will not fix everything, except Google has expressed that its designers are as yet attempting to improve its photography based-tech with at least some expectations of better addressing individuals of all skin tones. As a Black individual who loves to take and share photographs of his family, I'm anticipating what the organization has coming up.

Battle 2021 : Iphone 12 Vs Samsung S21 Ultra

Even though Pandemic Covid19 is still strongly storming out many countries today, we still need to watch out latest smartphone technology in order to deliver information as fast and efficient as possible.

Let see both Apple 12 and Samsung S21 Ultra. Both are the current killer in 2021.

APPLE IPHONE 12

Apple has delivered four distinct varieties of the iPhone 12, more than it at any point has at one time. In spite of those decisions, the conventional, customary model is as yet a decent pick. The standard iPhone 12, what begins at around $830 for a 64GB model, is the best cell phone for the vast majority.

The 12 has a similar generally plan, a similar processor, a similar remote charging, a similar Face ID framework, a similar 5G help, a similar front camera, and similar principle and wide-point back cameras as the pricier 12 Pro yet for many dollars less. On top of all that, it comes in five tones, one beyond what you can look over in the Pro models.

Contrasted with the iPhone 12 smaller than normal, the iPhone 12 has a perceptibly roomier showcase and a greater battery — two things that are critical to numerous individuals. At 6.1 inches, it's large enough to make watching video and perusing text agreeable and drawing in, yet it isn't huge to the point that it's appallingly difficult to use in one hand or fit in your pocket. Battery life is additionally generally excellent; you can dependably anticipate that this phone should last throughout the day without expecting to energize before bed.

The 12 surrenders the fax camera that is accessible on the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, however that is something not every person will miss. The iPhone 12's camera framework is all that you can get in this value range and is fantastic at most anything you'd use it for. It likewise can shoot Dolby Vision HDR for more splendid and more powerful video.

Since the 12 has Apple's most recent cell phone processor, the A14 Bionic, it has very quick execution and liquid activitys. It likewise has a sleeker, more present day plan than the past iPhone 11 or iPhone XR, which feel tacky in examination.

The base iPhone 12 accompanies 64GB of capacity, yet as normal with an iPhone, it's not expandable, so we suggest purchasing the 128GB model for just $50 more.

Altogether, the iPhone 12 is a simple decision for a great many people: it offers high level execution, plan, and camera highlights, while giving solid battery life to less cash than different choices available

SAMSUNG S21 ULTRA

In the event that neither size nor cost is a worry, the best Android telephone you can purchase right currently is the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. With a major 6.8-inch screen and the best cameras you can get on an Android telephone, it's the no-bargain pick. Now and again, its cameras can even best the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra accompanies the most recent and best specs you can get on Android. It has the most recent Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, which is the quickest you can get on Android. It highlights support for S Pen pointers in the event that you like to utilize a pen with your telephone, in spite of the fact that it's sold independently. The screen has a high revive rate, which makes looking over much smoother. It likewise has an immense battery that will most recent two days absent a lot of exertion.

Samsung refreshed the plan of the S21 Ultra, with a metal rail that bends normally into the camera knock on the back. It is the most attractive large telephone you can get at the present time. In any case, we can't say we like Samsung's product so much, which right now is somewhat jumbled and includes advertisements in places like the climate application. For a sleeker encounter the OnePlus 9 Pro would be a decent decision; the Ultra beats it on screen and camera quality, however it's a decent gadget for what it's worth and offers a more adult interpretation of Android OS.

That camera knock houses four cameras: an ordinary wide-point with a 108-megapixel sensor, a ultrawide, and two diverse zooming focal points. This makes it an inconceivably flexible camera framework that additionally has a huge load of cutting edge video highlights like Pro modes and 8K chronicle.

Beginning at $1,199.99, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a pricey telephone. Fortunately, Samsung telephones are limited early and regularly. In the event that you are on the lookout for one, it merits searching for an arrangement prior to purchasing.

India suffers airlines data hacking after Covid 19

Programmers have taken information on about 4.5 million Air India travelers all throughout the planet in the most recent break revealed by a significant carrier.

Names, Visa numbers and identification data were among the information taken, Air India said in an articulation delivered late Friday.

The state-claimed monster said it was "getting the undermined workers" and utilizing "outer trained professionals" on information security just as working with Visa organizations.

"We profoundly lament the bother caused and like proceeded with help and trust of our travelers," the carrier said.

Various aircrafts have been hit by information breaks as of late. English Airways was fined $28 million a year ago by a British guard dog after subtleties of 400,000 travelers were lost in a 2018 cyberattack.

Cathay Pacific was fined $700,000 after subtleties of in excess of 9,000,000 customers were lost in 2018.

Also, minimal expense transporter EasyJet said a year ago that programmers had taken the email and travel subtleties of around 9,000,000 clients.

Air India reported in March that it had been educated in February by its information handling organization, SITA PSS of a cyberattack.

The break included individual information enlisted between August 2011 and February 2021, the carrier said.

SITA, which gives IT reinforcement to a large part of the aeronautics business, said at the time that it had been the objective of a "profoundly refined assault" that had influenced various carriers.

Air India is essential for the Star alliance of aircrafts and SITA handles PC activities for its regular customer program.

Different aircrafts in the coalition cautioned travelers in March of the cyberattack yet most said just names and long standing customer numbers had been gotten to

What smatphone to buy in 2020

If you want to buy a new smartphone, what is the features that you need to look into?

Well I could visualize 3 element here:

1. Bigger processor and RAM
2. Bigger battery capacity
3. Bigger Screen
4. Design
5. Camera

These factors are important to let us experience better on our new phone.

Bigger Processor and RAM (Memory)

For me, this the most crucial for us the run multiple applications at the same time. If you a mobile gamers, this is even more important to run the 2k/4k display continously ( off course the Nvidia video processor is much better ). Running so many apps simultanously with lagging is the requirement to have such a bigger processor and RAM . Let say 2.4Ghz Octacore with 8gb RAM is the minimum requirement for todays smartphone?

Bigger battery capacity

Most of the smartphones come with range of 4000mAH to 4500mAH battery. Though it seems big enough , but it is actually not enough to run bigger processing on smartphone, like playing games, watching 4K/8K video, taking 4k/8K videos, or even video editing.

I would say the minimum battery requirement should be at least 5500 mAH. Then we would not have headache to find huge power bank capacity due to frequent battery drain on our smartphone.

Bigger Screen

I do believe today smartphone is not only for phone call or video calls or even video chat, but it is already beyond boundary. We now edit document with smartphone, video editing with smartphone, access cloud server via smartphone, and start to getting everything via smartphone. So, how is the screen we need to perform all this task? With 6 to 6.5 inch diagonal screen size, I would say it is balance between acceptably holding the smartphone and clearly working on the job assignment. bigger than that wont be called as smartphone anymore and smaller than that is quiet difficult to view the job on the screen

Design

Well I do not opt for design but we still look into stylish smartphone rather than a bulky boxy one. But for me, the above two are the most important criteria.

Camera

This is very particular if you are a vlogger or photographer or those like to show off their new smart phone ( with superb design ). Bigger camera capacity could optimize your video and photo shot quality aspecially for traveller.

At the end, it is up to you what smartphone is your best choice, I could say most of the users buy expensive smartphone but utilize less than 50% of smatphone capacity. Is it a waste? well it is up to you again.

Xiaomi now become third

Never we could imagine google still can affect Huawei, even though , Huawei boss claimed that they could strongly survive even without google service. They come out with their own set of service Huawei Mobile Service, which is officially embedded in the new Huawei P40.

But thats not what people need in reality. People still need google, especially other than China I think. With the Xiaomi sales surpass Huawei in February 2020, it is a clear indication that, Google service still give some major impact on smartphone.

Xiaomi has recently join premium market segment with its Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, which though its technical specification seems cannot beat Huawei P40, but Xiaomi still get major consumer support due to its google service.

IoT outbreak with 5G spectrum

Since years ago, Internet of Things (IoT) has become a new digital boom. The emergence of IoT allow almost all the equipment and tools connected to each other; cars, electrical equipment, parking, building, CCTVs, sensors any many more.

Following the concept:

"Everything that can be connected, will be connected"

The above exemplifies how organization colud adopt the Internet of Things (IoT) to maximize human values – by embedding sensors, software and other technologies into their physical assets to connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the internet.

The 5G technology that recently born is believe to carry the mesh infrastructur among connected IoT devices. The 5G technologu could extend until more kilometers in radius with million of usersper base station will bring the IoT to the next level.

By being a software-defined network, 5G will replace the need for cables by operating on the cloud instead. It will have a hundred times better capacity than 4G and will dramatically improve internet speed. Response times will also be much faster with 5G. The 4G network responds to our commands in just under 50 milliseconds; with 5G it will take around one millisecond – 400 times faster than the blink of the eye. For a world that is increasingly dependent on the internet to function, a reduction in time delay is critical.

Covid-19 outbreak challenge semiconductor PCs makers

Up to date, more that 100000 people got infected with Cvid-19 virus and more than 3000 died.

Covid-19 also give huge impact the most of PC makers coz most of PC parts come from China. HP for an example, its PC manufacturing, the largest is in Wuhan. Just imagine, the problem with the Intel processor has already been delaying their production, the Covid-19 outbreak thouroughly close HP desktop production in Wuhan. HP PC delivery around the world has been delayed for at least 6 months due to these two issues.

Dell also delay on its PC delivery. In fact, most of manufacturers that parts come from China will experience supply shortage due to virus pandemic.

Microsoft is ready to release its office Apps for Linux OS

After years of years struggling on runnng Office on Linux, This year seems to be different. Microsoft is delivering on the promise to work on their Office Apps for Linux OS. Teams is available today (in a “Public Preview” state), and that’s good news for many organizations both large and small.

announcement via the Microsoft Tech Community blog:

The Microsoft Teams client is the first Office app that is coming to Linux desktops, and will support all of Teams’ core capabilities. Teams is the hub for teamwork that brings together chat, video meetings, calling, and collaboration on Office 365 documents and business processes within a single, integrated experience.

Marissa Salazar, Microsoft

The wording is really promising, especially in light of the increasingly vocal petitions for Microsoft to bring more of their software and services to Linux. At a glance, it definitely appears that the core functionality of Teams is present: document collaboration, calendar integration, screen sharing, video conferencing, and more.A few months ago Microsoft proudly proclaimed “We are an open source company.” Things are certainly afoot in the Linux realm over at Microsoft HQ. Can we expect additional Office apps in this year 2020?

According to a Venture Beat report, Microsoft isn't discussing porting other Office 365 apps to Linux, but it did say there are “a handful of features related to Office app functionality and screensharing/control in meetings that are not yet available in Linux. Seems we are still dreaming...huh

how big do we require on smartphone camera

The Megapixels camera on smartphones is getting crazy and crazier. With the latest 108 Megapixel camera on Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, the world smartphone has become mirrorless camera as again.

The latest Huawei P40 also try to rival Galaxy S20 Ultra with its 52 Megapixel camera powered by hexedeca Bayer configuration, which should making them get closer to galaxy S20 Ultra
The most important concern is on how big is the battery required to have a long run taking photo and video without need to charge frequently. It will be a little bit inconvenient for sure.

MacOS 2020 Catalina still lead windows 11

Combating new Windows 11 bomb, Apple still.maintain the MacOS running Engine with the new update version, Catalina MacOS 10.15.

The major update is Apple truely remove the itunes that's has been available since 2001, which change with a new trigram approach; Music, Podcast and TV.

And most important notice, no mire 32bit apps on MacOS Catalina. Means it should become more stable in handling multiple Apps that is running on the same architecture, 64bit.

By the way, no need to improve on the UI, coz it is already great. Do not make the great things look bad.

New paradigm of Windows 11

Microsoft has recently released the latest Windows version, Windows 11 or Windows 2020. Thr new version has a quitely most of paradigm shist, almost totally new in its UI. Even the edge browser has been revamped to a new design, follow the chromium architecture, which lead faster and rich content.

If we follow closely on this new windows version, does it look like a liitle bit of MacOS and Linux GNome?

Well since I am working with both MacOS and Fedora Linux Gnome, it seems very much familiar. Of course, the windows version looks better with its new UI and works with multiple layout.

But the main concern, still, the security and require of huge processing in order to run the apps.

I never turn off my Macbook pro for couple of months and still working superb, but I dont think will do on Windows.

Internet of Things (IoT); How we want to share everything?

Internet of Thing(IoT) is one of the latest jargon that is believe to become next coming boom to the world. Wikipedia said the The Internet of Things (IoT) is the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing Internet infrastructure. Even the Gartner group has identified the next coming technology expected to be exploded is the Internet of Thing (IoT).
What makes this IoT?

If you know about Raspberry Pi, Arduino and IntelGalileo, than you will have a beginning of bright picture of what is the IoT all about....

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices. The term is closely identified with RFID as the method of communication, although it also may include other sensor technologies, wireless technologies or QR codes.

The Internet of Things is a difficult concept to define precisely. In fact, there are many different groups that have defined the term, although its initial use has been attributed to Kevin Ashton, an expert on digital innovation. Each definition shares the idea that the first version of the Internet was about data created by people, while the next version is about data created by things. In 1999, Ashton said it best in this quote from an article in the RFID Journal:

"If we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things - using data they gathered without any help from us - we would be able to track and count everything, and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost. We would know when things needed replacing, repairing or recalling, and whether they were fresh or past their best".

Most of us think about being connected in terms of computers, tablets and smartphones. IoT describes a world where just about anything can be connected and communicate in an intelligent fashion. In other words, with the Internet of Things, the physical world is becoming one big information system.

Mobile 3D Display : Is it really good and real?

After the huge success of James Cameron Avatar movie, everyone has been excited about three-dimensional (3D) display technology. TV vendors are marketing a number TV sets with 3D feature and new 3D movies are being viewed at theaters around the world. The first 3D digital camera was introduced a couple of years ago, but this year we are going to see even more 3D. Mobile phone displays are going 3D.

LG is introducing a mobile phone with 3D display that doesn't require users to wear 3D eyeglasses. The smartphone is called LG Optimus 3D.Not only is the display built on 3D technology, but the Optimus 3D comes with 3D camera as well. The smartphone has a dual-lens camera required for 3D recording. HDMI interface makes it possible to project images and videos from the phone to a TV screen. Included DLNA, UPnP and Wi-Fi features let users share media in a home network.Few people can remember it anymore, but LG introduced a touch screen mobile phone before the Apple iPhone. The LG phone wasn't a success, but the company has been able to sense new trends. Other phone manufacturers will follow LG now as well, but not instantly, because everyone wants to see how 3D on a phone is received by users.

3D on a mobile phone can be a headache or nirvana. TV vendors are warning people that watching 3D may cause dizziness or headache. 3D doesn't automatically mean success. For instance, Fujifilm introduced an advanced 3D camera and picture frame in 2009. The products never created a buzz in the industry even though they didn't require special goggles for viewing. Fujifilm 3D images could only be viewed on the camera display or purpose-built image frame.

The same applies to the LG Optimus 3D. Although it is possible to capture 3D images on the phone, a dedicated monitor is required to view the images anywhere else besides on the phone screen. In order to create the 3D effect without special eyeware, the display has to viewed from a certain distance (that can't be changed).

Nonetheless, games, photos and videos can look excellent on a 3D screen.

Car makers become more stable to take breath

American car buying trend has shown decrease in percentage drop since years back. Beside Honda, who is a car sale champion, the rest has shown their improvement in the sales. Led by Ford, the automotive industry in US just decrease 10.7 %, which the lowest decrease compared the the sales in year 2008. Even Chrysler, which emerged from bankruptcy protection early in June, saw its year-over-year sales decline shrink, and analysts say that’s among the signs that an auto industry slump that began with $4 per gallon gasoline last summer could be leveling off.

Factors such as a slowly improving economy and government incentives of up to $4,500 to trade in inefficient clunkers for new vehicles could lead to modest improvements in the second half of the year, he said. And while Chrysler’s sales results were dismal, the figures were roughly in line with analyst estimates and reflect a company that is in a major transition following bankruptcy protection and new focus on more fuel efficient vehicles.

Economists say there are signs that the economy is recovering, with housing starts rising more than expected in May and wholesale prices remaining in check. But the Conference Board reported Wednesday that consumer confidence fell unexpectedly in June.

GM’s decline improved when compared with previous months even though it entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on June 1. GM plans to sell or close Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer and Saab to focus on four core brands — Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick.

At Chrysler, though, the company sold only 68,297 cars and trucks last month as it emerged from bankruptcy protection, and many of those were due to strong incentives of more than $4,800 per car, according to Edmunds.

Analysts predict that June sales, adjusted for seasonal variances and multiplied to determine an annual rate, could top the 10 million mark for the first time this year. During several months earlier in 2009, U.S. car and truck sales dropped to a rate of about 9 million vehicles, a huge reduction from more than 16 million as recently as 2007.

THe hottest technology of the century

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A HOT TECHNOLOGY?

Unfortunately, as one leading analyst recently put it, being "hot" is no guarantee that a technology will succeed. Also needed is backing by the industry's top vendors (incumbent and start-ups alike), significant development dollars and revenue potential, and the ability to generate more than just a buzz in the industry (a.k.a. hype). The technologies we've chosen all have these characteristics in common.

To gain a larger perspective on the technologies on our master list, we asked a dozen of our favorite analysts for their opinions and, as usual, they didn't disappoint. The Top 10 list this year is a little heavy on the optics side, but it's tough to ignore a market that has garnered such incredible interest and has such potential for increasing the capacity, reach and economics of service provider networks. New twists on incumbent technologies also show lots of promise. Here, in no particular order, are Telecommunications'(r) picks of the 10 hottest technologies of 2000:

1. Soliton

2. Passive optical networks

3. Voice over DSL

4. Time Division Duplexing

5. Tunable Lasers

6. Optical Domain Service Interconnect (ODSI)

7. Synchronization

8. IP VPNs

9. Gigabit Ethernet

10. Very-short-range optics

1 Soliton: Barging Ahead

The concept is more than 150 years old, but it could revolutionize optical networks. Although not without controversy, some vendors are looking to solitons to build the next generation of dense wavelength division multiplexers (DWDM) that can operate over longer distances and provide higher-capacity channels. Solitons are pulses of light that keep their shape even after colliding with one another. This phenomenon was first observed by a Scotsman, John Scott Russell, as he rode alongside a barge in a canal in Edinburgh. As the barge came to halt, he noticed that a large solitary wave, after colliding with other waves, continued for several miles without losing its shape.

Although work with solitons began a quarter-century ago at Bell Labs, advances in DWDM technology have overshadowed this research. Now some companies such as French start-up Algety Telecom are convinced soliton DWDM systems will solve the problem of chromatic dispersion, or the broadening of a pulse of light, in DWDM networks. Algety, which has its roots in CNET--France Telecom's R&D unit that is credited with being the first to transmit 1 Tbps over 1000 km using soliton technology--plans to have a beta version of a soliton-based DWDM system before the end of the year. The company is particularly interested in the U.S. market and will soon be establishing an office in the States, According to Jereme Faul, Algety's vice president of software strategy and development, while there might be some debate over whether solitons are necessary for 10-Gbps wavelengths, 40-Gbps and higher wavelengths demand the use of solitons.

However, officials at Cisco Optical Networking Group (formerly Pirelli Optical Systems), have rejected solitons for high-rate systems, although MCI conducted a successful trial in 1998 using Pirelli's soliton-based DWDM systems that transmitted four data streams at 10 Gbps each. Stuart Woods, North American product marketing manager for the Cisco group, noted that soliton uses the return-to-zero (RZ) modulation format, whereas network devices such as routers, ATM switches and SONET equipment are based on the nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) scheme. "Once you go down the path of RZ, you're automatically closing yourself to being interoperable," he said. According to Woods, neither distance nor faster channel speeds require the use of RZ. Moreover, a move to 25-GHz channel spacing cannot be done with solitons because a soliton has wide pulse. According to Woods, what exist today are not true solitons but dispersion-managed solitons that require properties in the fiber to tweak the pulse so it holds its shape. "Dispersi on-managed soliton is what we used in the trial [at MCI]," he said.

Rick Barry, chief technology officer for Sycamore, takes issue with such criticism. Barry said that there is "overwhelming agreement" that dispersion-managed soliton is the choice technology for next-gen, ultralong-haul, terrestrial systems. Addressing the objection to the RZ format, Barry said: "Most routers use NRZ because NRZ is simpler and routers were not designed or required to transmit ultralong-haul distances. The interface between the routers and WDM system will convert the NRZ format to the RZ format. This (approach] separates the design of the routers from the design of the WDM system." Algety received a vote of confidence on the technology in March when a second round of venture capital funding raised $31 million.

The potential of the Internet remains tied to solving the issue of the last-mile Bottleneck. While much attention is being given such broadband access technologies as DSL, cable modem and wireless, often overlooked is the passive optical network (PON) despite indications of a fast growing fiber access market. Communications Information Researchers (CIR) estimates that the combined fiber-to the carb/fiber-to-the-building market in the United States will jump from about $800 million this year to approximately $1.8 billion in 2004. PON technology which only came to public attention last year, provides a straight-forward way for facilities-based service providers to support customers' multi-service needs.

Beware! Video Game era is shrinking

The video-game industry saw its first sales decline since March 2006, primarily because of the lack of a blockbuster game on the scale of last year's "Halo 3," a market researcher said Friday.

Sales of games, excluding PC games, consoles, and accessories fell 7% in the month to $1.27 billion from $1.35 billion in September 2007, NPD Group reported.

Yahoo aims at mobile developers with an open developer platform called Yahoo Go. World's coolest bluetooth headset, live from the Consumer Electronics Show. Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies introduces water-powered fuel cells that can generate enough power to recharge cell phones, music players, and even laptop computers.

"This is the first true monthly decline the industry has experienced since March of 2006," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in an e-mailed statement. "It's important to keep in mind, however, that this month's 7% decline is against a month (September 2007) that itself was up 75% from the prior September."

The big jump last year was driven by Microsoft's "Halo 3," which broke records in becoming one of the top-selling video games of all time. The title, exclusive to Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, posted sales of $170 million the day it was released and more than $300 million in the first week. It also broke records for online play with more than 2.7 million gamers logging in the first week.

Even without a "Halo 3," industry sales so far are 26% ahead of the same period last year and are on track to reach $22 billion or more. "Overall, the health of the video-games industry remains quite strong despite the rocky economic conditions," Frazier said.

Whereas 35% of last year's game sales came from "Halo 3," this year's revenues are spread a bit more broadly with seven titles achieving sales of 250,000 units, compared with three in 2007, NPD said. Among the most successful games this year is "Rock Band 2," which achieved sales of more than 360,000 units just on the Xbox. Sales are expected to remain robust, given the release later this year of versions for Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's Wii.

While PC games are not included in the NPD numbers, Frazier pointed out two titles worth noting. "Spore" achieved sales of 406,000 units, and "Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning" reached sales of 274,000 units. The numbers placed both games in the top 10 list of combined console, portable, and PC games sales for the month.

Revenue from consoles was flat in September, because of lower prices, NPD said. The average retail price of hardware across all platforms was down 8% from a year ago. Price cuts, however, spurred unit sales. In dropping Xbox 360 prices, Microsoft saw a 78% increase in unit sales from the previous month.

"This increase, despite the acceleration of economic turmoil during the month of September, is a solid indicator of the health of the industry heading into the holiday season," Frazier said.
